The Connection Between Acne and Hormones PDF Print E-mail

Studies have shown that acne is caused by the imbalance of hormones. Its development can be associated with the changes in the body’s hormones. A person with a high level of androgen and testosterone hormones has oily skin, making him prone to acne. So with this finding, it is concluded that balancing androgen and testosterone is the key to having healthy skin.

This study of acne and hormones connection further states that majority of the people who suffer from hormonal imbalance usually get lesions on their lower face, particularly on the chin and jaw line. Sometimes, the acne will also appear on the chest and back. These changes of the hormones usually start at the age of 19 to 24, affecting both teens and mature people.

Acne normally starts to appear when the body starts to produce androgen hormones.  It is basically the androgens that stimulate the sebaceous glands to enlarge and emit sebum.  The sebum then gets stocked in the follicle, and then moves up to the hair shaft until it reaches the exterior part of the skin.  As this movement occurs, the sebum then blends with bacteria, which cause the hair follicle blockade.  It is merely the blocked follicles which become the breeding area for bacteria, resulting in acne.

The study also explains the occurrence of acne in teens as well as in adults.  In teens, it is commonly noted that during the onset of puberty, androgen is produced, which holds a major role in the development of acne.  On the other hand, it is believed that the menstrual cycle plays a role in the development of acne in adult women.  In fact, other reports have noted that acne that worsens during a woman’s monthly cycle is not something that women will grow out of as they get older.

Our hormones are responsible for some of our body’s functions. Sleep, growth, and some other related things can be largely attributed to our hormones. So with this study, experts agree that when hormones are out of balance, skin problems like acne happen. Whereas, a balance of these poses no likelihood of acne to occur.
